Balanced Birth Prep Series

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This four week course covers the natural progression of labor, comfort in labor, optimal fetal positioning, and postpartum care. Classes will begin with a mindfulness exercise followed by an instructional portion, group discussions, and hands on activities. Offered bimonthly Tuesday evenings 6:30 – 9:00 pm. Classes are kept intimate by capping enrollment to 6 couples.

CLASS 1: THE PROGRESSION OF LABOR

The progression of labor class focuses on the physiological process of labor and helps the birthing person and their partner to recognize the phases of labor. We will discuss the natural progression of labor, hormonal processes related to labor and birth, when to go to your place of delivery, and birth by cesarean. This class also dives into the concept of optimal fetal positioning. We will discuss the relationship between the pregnant body and fetal positioning, body mechanics, and exercises that can ease some discomfort in pregnancy and labor. As we process each topic there will be space for questions, discussion, and hands on activities. The class will be active and engaging, please wear comfortable clothing.

CLASS 2: COMFORT DURING LABOR

In this class we discuss and practice various positions to in which to labor, natural coping techniques, and medications often used in labor. This class is designed to honor and empower the decisions of the birthing person which is why we review strategies related to informed decision making, and having well stocked “tool box” when considering comfort options in labor.

CLASS 3: LABOR OPTIONS AND DECISION MAKING SKILLS

During the class we will discuss the myriad of options there are for labor and birth. We will explore different laboring positions and the importance of movement in labor while revisiting some topics introduced in the comfort during labor course. This class will also introduce concepts and strategies that empower couples to make informed decisions.

CLASS 4: POSTPARTUM PLANNING AND PREPARATION

The final class in the series focuses on postpartum planning and preparation and how it is essential to the transition into parenthood. This class will focus on the importance of rest in the postpartum period, expectations and acceptance, breastfeeding, and basic newborn care.
